Since I live in Bergamo, people usually have to look up the map of Italy to find my new home. Then one of the comments I hear most often is... Wow, Lake Como is so close! Well, yes, it's pretty close. And I'll give you another bit of info: Lake Iseo is even closer. But please, don't go blabbing about it too much, it's our little secret here. 🤫
In Lombardy, we are spoiled. There are loads of amazing places to visit just an hour's drive from Bergamo. But at the top of the list, every single time, is the lake. And now, we've got one of the most wonderful problems: picking the lake to visit.
It's usually down to two: the big-name Lake Como and the gorgeous, protected local favourite, Lake Iseo. It's not just about picking a nice view, it's about your lifestyle. So, are you after the glamour of a picture-perfect retreat, or the quiet, authentic vibe of a local Italian community?
The Unbeatable Charm of the Lakes

The beauty of the deep water, surrounded by spectacular mountain peaks, is the perfect antidote to a busy week for professionals and families.
If you live in Milan, Lake Como is usually the go-to option.
If you live in Bergamo, like me, Lake Como is always a good idea, but we have another, equally compelling option: Lake Iseo, which many locals consider to be the ultimate lake. IL LAGO.
So, where are you spending your next Sunday in Lombardy?
💎 The Luxury Icon: Lago di Como

Lake Como is probably the most famous body of water in Italy, and with good reason. Its distinctive Y-shape, dramatic fjord-like landscape, and the sheer density of elegant villas make it feel like walking into a Renaissance painting.
The vibe: glamour, history, stunning scenery
Â
When you choose Lago di Como, you're choosing la dolce vita, no ifs, ands, or buts. You'll get stunning views of the water, well-kept gardens and an overall feel for historical luxury. It's the place to go to impress visitors or simply immerse yourself in cinematic beauty.
3 + 1 Tips for Lake Como (no, George is not included)
Â
1. Bellagio: this iconic village, located right at the centre where the three branches meet, is often described as the Pearl of the Lake. If you're after some Insta-worthy photos, you can't miss the winding staircases and colourful buildings.
2. Varenna: a bit quieter and more romantic than Bellagio, and famous for its picturesque lakeside path between the rocks and the water, to the right of the pier. It's called the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Lovers' Walk) and it leads to the town centre.
Â
3. Villa del Balbianello: this isn't just a villa; it's the location of luxury weddings and epic movie scenes (featured in Star Wars and Casino Royale). The terraced gardens are one of the most gorgeous spots on the whole lake.
+ 1. The Bellano Gorge: a really exciting natural canyon that the Pioverna river and the Adda glacier has carved out, and you can get into it via suspended walkways. It's a great contrast to the polished elegance of the villas and perfect for families looking for a bit of adventure.

🌿 The Local Soul: Lago d'Iseo

For us locals in Bergamo, Lake Iseo is our backyard–quick, accessible, and unspoiled. It offers the same kind of stunning natural beauty as Lake Como (majestic mountains, clear water), but without the tourist crowds or the price tag that goes with them.
The vibe: authenticity, community, tranquility
Â
Lago d'Iseo is the perfect place where you can really experience the authentic Northern Italian lifestyle. People greet you in Italian (not just English), everything's a bit slower, and the trattorie serve proper regional food. If you're a foreigner moving to the area, this is the lake that'll make you feel right at home.
3 + 1 Tips for Lake Iseo
Â
1. Iseo: let's start with the main town, which is charming and lively. Why not spend your Sunday morning strolling through the historic centre, before sitting down for a relaxing lakeside lunch?
Â
2. Lovere: voted one of Italy's most beautiful villages (uno dei borghi più belli d'Italia), Lovere is located on the northern shore, with stunning architecture and dramatic mountain views.
Â
3. Monte Isola: take the ferry across and check out the undisputed highlight: the biggest lake island in Europe where people actually live. It's completely car-free, so take a hike and discover the sanctuary at the top or the colonies of cats right on the main promenade.
Â
+ 1: The Panoramic View towards Castro: this is a real hidden gem. The road that cuts into the rock face between Castro and Lovere offers some amazing views of the lake, which is a perfect spot for photos that most tourists don't even know about. Experienced drivers only!

✨ The Wonderful Problem Solved
So, which lake is going to be the winner? The great news is that you don't have to choose. Bergamo is the perfect hub for foreigners dreaming of moving to Northern Italy, with access to both the iconic luxury of Lake Como and the quiet, authentic charm of Lake Iseo.
Lake Como is the place to be when you're after a touch of glamour, about to host some international guests, or just looking for that classic, cinema-style Italian atmosphere.
Lake Iseo is the place to go when you want authenticity, great value without breaking the bank, the chance to practise your Italian and a quick, spontaneous lakeside escape.
